Naturalist Tours
Why does Bodega Bay rival The Great Barrier Reef in Australia?

Come and find out on a 33' sailing vessel with Captain Rich Crumley and naturalist Katja Svendsen.  On this four hour tour you'll start by meeting with Katja at the wine shop Gourmet Au Bay in Bodega Bay.  There she will greet you with with a cup of coffee.  While sitting on Gourmet Au Bay's splendid deck overlooking Bodega Bay's channel, she will talk and explain about the ecosystem of Bodega Bay and what you should expect to see while on the sailboat.  Bring all knowledge, don't worry if you don't know anything, by the end of the tour you will become a naturalist.  She will give you an identication card full of pictures and descriptions of sea life.  You will have an opportunity to be able to start to identify animals, birds, macro/micro invertabrates, etc...  She will start with what causes tides,  what animals are affected, and how they are connected to tides.  Katja will explain what mudflats are and why they are important to the local birds and sea creatures.
A very crucial ingredient for the ocean is upwelling.  What does this mean and how is upwelling connected to the California Current?  Katja will explain about this phenomenon and why so many ocean animals depend so heavily on upwelling.
Bodega Bay is famously known to birdwatchers.  Not only was the film "The Birds" filmed in Bodega Bay, but every year rare and wonderful birds show up by the hundreds.  Katja will talk about the Pacific Flyway; who comes and who goes, and why birds are so important to this precious ecosystem.
From the peninsula called Bodega Head one has the opportunity to watch whales, catch glimpses of dolphins, observe sea lions.  On the sailboat one will be able to observe these creatures up close.  Katja will talk about the migration of the whales; the differences between harbor seals and sea lions, and how to identify specific dolphins.
Ever wonder why California has so many earthquakes?  California attracts geologists from all over.  Right in Bodega Bay, California's most important fault line runs just off the coast into the interior of California. Find out what geology has to do with oceans, waves, currents and weather.
Finally, Katja will talk about the human impacts on Bodega Bay; how it has been shaped and how humans will continue to shape Bodega Bay.
All of these subjects will be covered in one hour.  At this time we will all reconvene at Captain Rich Crumley's sailing vessel.  Katja will turn it over to Rich who will proceed with telling you all you need to know about being safe on the boat.  Rich has been sailing in all kinds of waters since he was six years old.  Katja has been a teacher/naturalist teaching to all ages for eleven years.  She has taught marine biology, tidepool ecology, redwood ecology, geology, weather/climate, night ecology, water ecology, riparian ecology.  She has a Bacholar of Arts in Outdoor Education from Prescott College.
